The emerging mindful movement training approach has a strong focus on creating postural awareness and improving overall kinesthesia. This foundational approach to training is a great place to start if you are just beginning your fitness journey. While many start their fitness journey ready to hit the ground running on day one – building a strong and reinforced foundation is critical to the beginning of an exercise program.

Mindful movement training is more than just a few stretches before a workout.

There are several components to create the body awareness and core strength needed to support the body throughout the fitness journey.

Stability

A stable support structure is the best foundation to work upon. For humans, our main structural support is provided by our bones, joints and tendons that connect to our muscles. Stability and postural awareness increase as you exercise with proper body alignment and technique. Posture is the direct link to mobility and stability as we are most stable when we maintain good posture and maximize the range of motion in our joints.

Balance

This is a skill often taken for granted. We encounter basic balance challenges each day; i.e. walking up stairs, carrying items in each hand of different weights, etc. Integrate balance training into your workouts by performing basic exercises on a single leg or while standing on balance pads or discs. Training in this way not only will increase your overall equilibrium but also activate multiple muscle groups burning more calories along the way.

Flexibility

Active range of motion and muscular flexibility are two factors that can enhance or inhibit movement. Flexibility training is typically reserved for workout warm-ups and cool downs. To experience the full benefits of flexibility training, choose 1-2 days per week in which you focus just as much attention on lengthening the muscles as you do to strengthening them. Adding a weekly yoga class to your training schedule not only will stretch and strengthen your muscles but also improve overall body awareness, balance and stability.

Stamina

Endurance is beneficial for athletes and weekend warriors alike. Whether you are playing a sport or working toward a fitness goal, lack of muscular endurance can be a limiting factor. Mindful movement exercises train the body to hold appropriate postures under loads ranging from as little as 3 lbs. up to an individual’s entire bodyweight. Stamina develops as a result of weekly workouts containing both muscular strength and endurance-based exercises within a structured training program.

Modifying your workouts to include mindful movement exercises will establish and reinforce your anatomical training foundation. Whether you are beginning your fitness journey or a regular gym-junkie, dedicating more time to flexibility and balance exercises within your workouts can lead to an increase in both endurance and strength performance.

“Within National Parks is room – glorious room – room in which to find ourselves, in which to think and hope, to dream and plan, to rest and resolve.”

–Enos Mills (Naturalist and Father of Rocky Mountain National Park)

This year, the National Parks Service turns 100 years old. My family and I have developed a strong affection for the parks system over the past few years. Our fascination began with a vacation to Yellowstone National Park five years ago. Until then, we had stepped a toe or two into Great Smoky Mountains National Park and took a peek at the Grand Canyon, but we had not explored any of the parks for any significant length of time.

What we discovered in Yellowstone, and every other location since, is what continues to propel us from park to park: We found space and time. We found quality time and the room in which to enjoy it; long hikes with meaningful conversations, outdoor picnics observing nature and wildlife and wide open, glorious space. No longer did we have to compete with thousands of other vacationers vying for seats or long lines. We were in the front row with the best seats in the house and all the time in the world.

As a yoga teacher and practitioner, it seemed natural to pair our destinations with yoga. My photos have become a travel scrapbook documenting not only my practice but time spent with my favorite people on Earth.

I challenge you all: Opt out of the theme parks and crowded tourist traps for your next family vacation. Say no to long lines of people and the noise of the masses. Pick one, any one, of the 58 National Parks in the United States. There are no bad choices. Get away, really away, with your loved ones. Find the time that has eluded you. Embrace the expanse you never knew you craved. When you leave the congestion and distractions, you open yourself up to experiencing much, much more. Learn more about GlidesUp: Glide Paddle Yoga is a collective of water-loving yoga teachers, practitioners and enthusiasts! Whether you’re a first-time paddle boarder or a lifelong yogi, welcome. We are so excited for you to try it out at Florida MANIA® and have fun while you explore taking your practice or teaching to the water. Is there anything better than a dinner that only dirties up one pot while cooking? This delicious chicken and veggie dinner keeps clean-up to the minimum and the fitness payoff to the max – not to mention it tastes phenomenal (even the kids will eat it!).

Cooking a healthy dinner at home does not have to be complicated or take lots of time. This simple recipe for chicken tenders and veggies will take you only about 30 minutes from start to finish. Meals that are rich in protein and fiber and low in carbs, like this one, will help you build muscle and stay lean.

Servings: 8

Here’s what you need…

  • 2 cups butternut squash, cubed
  • 2 Tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 pound organic chicken breast tenders
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon crushed rosemary plus a dash more
  • ½ teaspoon sweet paprika plus a dash more
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme plus a dash more
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • dash of pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon celery seeds
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley
  • pinch of ground cumin
  • 3 organic zucchini, cut into half moons
  • 2 large heirloom tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  1. In a large skillet, heat 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil over medium heat. Add the cubed butternut squash and sauté, covered, for about five minutes, until tender. Transfer the squash to a bowl, then set the skillet back on medium heat.
  2. Add the remaining 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil. Season the chicken with salt and pepper, add to the hot skillet. Sear for about 5 minutes until browned on all sides.
  3. Turn the heat down to medium-low. Sprinkle with all the seasonings. Add the remaining ingredients and cook, covered, for 15 minutes. Add the butternut squash back into the pot for the remaining 5 minutes.
